THE CONSEQUENCES OF SOL
VOYAGE I: PATCH (2025)

for solo marimba

Difficulty: Intermediate/Advanced
Duration: ~6:30-7:00
Instrumentation: 5.0 Octave Marimba
Descriptors: whimsical/exploratory/philisophical

Voyage I: Patch is the first of 3 solos in the Consequences of Sol series, succeeded by the upcoming Voyage II: Gnomon and Voyage III: Membrane. The piece is approximately 6:30-7:00 in length, and is intermediate/advanced difficulty. Featuring intense technical sections and whimsically jazzy interludes, it tells the story of [DO NOT DIVULGE THE MESSAGE / IT CANNOT KNOW WHAT WE ARE].
Performance by Joseph Flynn on a MIDI Keyboard with VDL. Hopefully 100% note-accurate.
Umbral Ambitions (2021)
for solo marimba

Difficulty: Advanced
Duration: ~4:30
Instrumentation: 5.0 Octave Marimba (can be played on 4.6 with inversions)
Descriptors: cinematic/intense/sinister/technical

'Umbral Ambitions' is my first composition for solo marimba, and it's been through several iterations before I arrived at this version. It was initially born out of my desire for unique repertoire to use in a Drum Corps audition, so the performer's technical athleticism is on full display for the majority of the piece. However as the piece itself evolved, I realized it wasn't just a gauntlet of octave grip shenanigans. It was a metaphor - for a conflict, both internal and external, between confidence and insecurity, between honed skill and blind luck. I titled it 'Umbral Ambitions' for the story it told - that of a hero versus a villain... from the villain's point of view.
Performance by Joseph Flynn on a 4.6-Octave Marimba for the 2021 DCI I&E Showcase. Not 100% note-accurate.

Forming The Emptiness
By Moto Fukushima of House of Waters
Transcribed/Adapted in 2021 by Joey Flynn
Performed by Nancy Zeltsman on her 2023 album purple music

From Nancy's website:

Forming the Emptiness, Op. 70 (2010) by Moto Fukushima
Moto Fukushima is a master of the six-string bass. With a background in jazz improvisation, Western classical music, and the music of South America, Moto's playing is a combination of finesse, subtlety, and power. This solo was released on the eponymous 2016 album House of Waters (GroundUP Music) that debuted at #2 on the iTunes Music Charts.
I was introduced to this stunningly beautiful – I would say, perfect! – piece by Joey Flynn when he transcribed it as a project in one of my classes at Berklee College of Music – from which Fukushima graduated with honors some years prior. It is published by House of Waters Music (ASCAP).

Thunder in Avon
for solo vibraphone

Difficulty: Intermediate
Duration: TBD
Instrumentation: 3.0 Octave Vibraphone
Descriptors: ethereal/pensive/jazzy

'Thunder In Avon' explores the concept of naturally occurring symbolism. Inspired by an unusual moment at my aunt's funeral service, the piece serves as a shout into the void, an unheard response to what may very well be a message from the departed.
